Will purchased an Unlimited Race
Plane from Eddie Andreini of Half Moon Bay called a Yakovlev
model 3, or a YAK3U/R2000.
This airplane was manufactured
in Cariova, Romania at the Avioane aircraft factory in the
beginning of 2005. Will plans on taking the airplane to
rookie school in June and competing in the Unlimited Class
in September. This version of the Yak has raced at Reno
in past years turning lap speeds as fast as 390 MPH.
“The Yak is essentially
a Sunday Flier, meaning it is a race plane but primarily
an airplane that you can go fly cross country or aerobatics
on any given day. I chose this particular version because
it has a dual-control cockpit and a 'reliable' engine."

The engine is a Pratt &
Whitney R-2000 7M2. It was used on the DC-4 and on the
Caribou. Our propeller is a Super DC-3 Prop, re-profiled
to look like blades of that era. The wheels and brakes
are from a Cessna 421 while the tailwheel is lockable
from the control stick. We carry 145 US gallons of Avgas.
The Yak comes stock with a Pre-oil system. The exhaust
is made by Sam Davis of Chino, Ca. bringing the rated
horsepower of this powerplant up into the 1400HP range.
Will has added a race spinner
and Water Spray Bar to the oil coolers as well as manually
closable oil cooler exits to add speed up at Reno. As
funds permit, I will add ADI or anti detonation Injection
to the carburetor for more horsepower.
